Ballads of the Book @ 8.30pm, Directors: Claire McCluskey, Margaret Shankland, Julie McCrone, Scotland, 2007 (15) 50 mins.

Full-length documentary Ballads of the Book covers a unique arts project in which the cream of Scottish contemporary music and writing talent co-operated to create a very modern work of national art.

The brainchild of Idewild's singer Roddy Woomble, the Ballads of the book initiative got writers such as Alisdair Gray, Ian Rankin and Hal Duncan to provide lyrics for musicians such as Aeroeogramme and Sons and Daughters, who then wrote the accompanying music. This creative love affair resulted in an album released on March 2007 by Scotland's biggest independent record label Chemikal Underground. The movie is produced by Glasgow production company, Polite.

Tickets £5/4

Tickets to both screenings and concert £7/6 (conc) Friday only. (after both screenings there will be a concert in the Gilmorehill G12 Theatre)

Surprise Closing Film @ 9pm (15)

Sounds Film Festival, in association with Chemikal Underground Records, is delighted to reveal the Closing Night Surprise Movie - a rare screening of Quadrophenia.

Quadrophenia, which has not been widely screened in the UK since 1997, will close this year's Sounds Film Festival at 9pm on Sunday 19 October 2008 in the University of Glasgow's Gilmorehill G12 cinema.

Directed by Franc Roddam in 1979, the film is set in 1960's London and tells the story of Jimmy Cooper (Phil Daniels), a fashion-obsessed, troubled teenager who listens to soul, take drugs and rides a Vespa for fun. Disillusioned by his parents' dead-end life, and loathing his job in an advertising firm, Jimmy escapes reality by heading off to a bank holiday weekend to Brighton with his Mod friends.

The weekend starts off with decadent partying and Jimmy finally gets to meet his Vespa-riding hero Ace Face (Sting), battle some Rockers and get lucky with Steph (Leslie Ash), the girl he has a crush on.

Sadly, after the weekend, reality and disappointments crowd in all the more and Jimmy decides to do something drastic!

Based on The Who's 1973 rock opera album Quadrophenia, the film caused outrage for the way it portrayed British youth culture, which only encouraged teenagers too young to go and see it. In the 1990's, Phil Daniels collaborated with Britpop band Blur on their hit single Parklife, which caused a whole new generation of young people to discover the film. Today it is considered a much-loved cult classic with unforgettable quotes and thrilling performances.

Sounds Film Festival aims to bring all Quadrophenia fans together for this one-night-only exclusive opportunity to see the film on the big screen again.
