After a summer of extreme heat, and amid intense debate about whether to greenlight drilling for new North Sea oil, the Environmental Rights Centre for Scotland and the University of Glasgow’s Just Transition research cluster explore how Scotland’s legal profession can respond to our escalating climate crisis.

We will be joined by two expert speakers at the forefront of successful climate litigation in the UK, Sarah Finch and Tessa Khan. Sarah Finch is a climate campaigner and the recipient of the Goldman Environmental Prize. She won a landmark legal victory against the UK Government, with the Supreme court ruling in her favour that oil and gas companies must assess the harm that will caused by the burning of fossil fuels before commencing drilling. Tessa Khan is a lawyer and the founder and executive director of Uplift, an organisation that supports a rapid and fair transition away from oil and gas. Uplift was a petitioner in the successful judicial review against the UK Government’s decision to approve drilling from the Jackdaw and Rosebank oil and gas fields.
