Having graduated from Glasgow University with a Doctorate in Musicology over 10 years ago, Glasgow-based multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Jo Mango has built an international career in songwriting and performance spanning many genres and disciplines. From co-devising and performing award-winning gig theatre piece ‘A Giant on the Bridge’, to collaborating on National Theatre of Scotland’s recent installation piece and winner of a Fringe First - ‘One Hundred Voices’, founding the first Masters in Songwriting in the country, and co-writing lead singles for internationally acclaimed Scottish bands such as Teenage Fanclub (Baby Lee), Mango has marked herself out as one of Scotland’s most masterful writers, creators and collaborators working in song. As a performing member of Vashti Bunyan’s band she has played on countless legendary stages across Europe, Asia, Australia and North America, including the Carnegie Hall (New York) at David Byrne’s Welcome to Dreamland series. This year she returns to focusing on her own solo work described by The National this year as “enthralling storytelling [with] generous warmth”. Her third full length album The Lightswitch was launched in June 2026. It is a luminous concept album of alternative chamber folk. The record was produced by British Independent Film Award-winning composer, Adem Ilhan, and features strings performed by the Elysian Collective (Pulp, Florence and the Machine) and drum arrangements by Chris Vatalaro (Radiohead, Brian Eno). Jo is currently a Reader in Music at the University of the West of Scotland where she specialises in participatory research through songwriting and arts-based practice.
