We are pleased to welcome Lilian Thuram, World Cup winner and anti-racist activist, whose book White Thinking: Behind the Mask of Racial Identity interrogates how racial hierarchies are constructed and maintained.

Taking inspiration from Lilian Thuram’s work, White Thinking explores barriers to anti-racism work within the heritage sector. The final report from the AHRC-funded project ‘White Thinking’ and the Failed Promise of Diversity in Scottish Heritage will be launched at this special event.

Building on Thuram’s ideas, the project asks:

What is the next step in moving from small-scale diversity initiatives toward lasting, structural change within Scottish heritage organisations?

The report includes:

Insights into the impact of grassroots heritage projects led beyond the professional sector.

A comparative analysis of small-scale interventions versus systemic approaches to tackling racism in organisational culture.

The event will feature:

A roundtable discussion with the report’s authors and contributors.

Perspectives from across the project’s five strands.

Facilitation by Zandra Yeaman, whose Curating Discomfort work at The Hunterian has been widely recognised as a powerful model for critical engagement in heritage spaces.

Refreshments will be served.
