Glasgow Library of Synthesised Sound hosts this special discussion event with acclaimed musician Barker, which continues Thinking Culture’s collaboration with visual artist Scott Myles. Join Barker and Myles for a conversation about their respective practices and the ways in which they have each worked with sculptural instruments. Chaired by Iain Finlay Walsh (University of Glasgow).
Myles’s artwork Instrument for the People of Glasgow, a modular Euro-rack synthesiser, was assembled by the artist from donations, featured in his solo exhibition Head in a Bellat Glasgow’s Gallery of Modern Art (2024-25) and then gifted to GLOSS where it is now part of their library. Instrument for the People of Glasgow extends Myles’s longstanding interest in gift exchange and in alternative economic models; functioning as a sonic ‘social sculpture’ rather than a commodity, it is now available for others to use.
Barker will also lead a three-hour workshop on developing live performance, exploring modular and hardware production, and introducing his Discrete Ensemble project, recorded at the Hamilton Mausoleum. He will demonstrate his full live set-up. Open to all experience levels. Book your ticket for the workshop here, whcih takes place on 6th May at Glasgow Library for Synthesised Sound.
Barker’s Discrete Ensemble, made in collaboration with Kay Sievers, is an installation for 8 automated acoustic string instruments. A living sound sculpture where every step transforms the music, Discrete Ensemble creates immersive sonic environments in collective spaces. First presented in August 2024 at the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin, the work will be presented for the first time in Scotland at Hamilton Mausoleum on 7th May 2026 as part of the ECHOES programme.
