A contemporary emblem book — wings and stones
Ingrid Hoepel, emblem scholar and artist, discusses "Flügel und Steine", her latest publication and work. This emblem book picks up the tri-partite 16th century emblem form to address contemporary themes of flight and expulsion, peace and war, hatred, love, discrimination, and gender issues, questioning the historical art form's significance in the current art scene and the impact of art on science and vice versa. Hybrid event -- in-person and on Zoom.

Ingrid Hoepel, Professor Emerita of History of Art at Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel, is the author and artist of a new book of emblems, Wings and Stones (2025). With images, mottos, and text, Ingrid takes up the forms and themes of the three-part emblem from the 16th century, but addresses the social, political, and ethical questions facing the world from today's perspective. Her themes are timeless—flight and expulsion, peace and war, hatred, love, discrimination, and gender issues. The picturae are mixed media, collage, and painting. As a scholar and artist, Ingrid questions the historical art form's significance in the current art scene. This also involves the impact of art on science and vice versa.
