Disability History Month
Date: Monday 20 October 2025 - Tuesday 23 December 2025
Venue: Archives & Special Collections foyer, Level 12, University Library
Category: Student events

This display explores the intertwined history of war, disability, medical innovation and social care in Scotland in the 20th century through archival material from the University of Glasgow. Centred on the pioneering work of Erskine Hospital, it traces the profound impact of technology, institutional care and public narratives of resilience on the experience of disability.

This display is part of the project, Phenomenal Bodies: Exploring Disability in Scottish Academic Collections led by the School of Art History at the University of St Andrews. A dispersed network of gallery displays, hosted by Scottish academic institutions with historical collections, it focuses on “the subjective lived experience of having a body, in all its physical diversity, and our attempts to understand it through scientific study and art.”
