Human societies have used tokens for thousands of years, and the Roman world was no different. Tokens made of bronze, brass and lead were created by a variety of different groups and individuals: men and women, professional organisations, cultic groups and the imperial family. The images on Roman tokens show a world of joy and celebration, of creativity and community - a unique glimpse into the worlds of those living in the Roman Empire. To celebrate the launch of 'The Roman World in 10 Tokens' online, this lecture explores the stories Roman tokens can tell us, focusing on those housed at The Hunterian.

Dr. Clare Rowan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Classics and Ancient History at the University of Warwick. She discovered coins as a source for history as a graduate student in Australia, and has since gone on to discover tokens as the principal investigator of an ERC project Token Communities in the Ancient Mediterranean.

Followed by a wine reception and canapes.
