This exhibition presents marine litter found on beach cleans conducted with members of the Scottish Islands Federation Marine Litter working group, the Solway Firth partnership and local communities on the islands of Bute, Eigg, Islay and mainland Orkney and in Dumfries and Galloway in February and March 2023. The objects in the exhibition were used as prompts for the co-creation of stories where our marine litter and plastics have become the archaeological finds of the future.
Each place’s exhibit creates a different possible future which together act to reveal the realities of the present and the concerns of those who experience the problem of marine litter first hand, on an almost daily basis. The exhibition will be accompanied by short animations created by students at Dumfries and Galloway College, showing their own imagined waste futures. The aim of the exhibition is to raise awareness of the nature of marine litter in Scotland's islands and to encourage visitors to think about how the present will be viewed by future generation.
