We are delighted to invite you to the final event of the AHRC-funded "Future Voices of Scottish Science Fiction and Fantasy Network". Join us and four amazing science fiction and fantasy creatives for a roundtable on challenging the past in SFF!
Future Voices of Scottish SFF Network
Date: Wednesday 19 April 2023
Time: 18:00 - 19:30
Venue: Online
Category: Public lectures, Academic events
Speaker: Iain Clark, Amal El-Mohtar, Harry Josephine Giles, and T. L. Huchu.
The network privileges under-represented Scottish voices of Science Fiction and Fantasy (SFF) working across different media (literature, gaming, film, art), with an emphasis on BAME and LGBTQ+ communities as well as practitioners with disabilities. In these dramatic times, we ask how creative practitioners imagine future worlds and respond to rapidly-changing global circumstances (e.g. the COVID-19 pandemic), concerns and anxieties (e.g. as expressed in the #MeToo or #BlackLivesMatter movements) through SFF writing/art/creativity. This is the final of four planned roundtables bringing together academics, creative practitioners, and fans. The theme of our April event is:
Challenging the Past (Canon and History) in SFF Narratives
How do contemporary practitioners respond to the established SFF canon by challenging narrow mindsets and the lack of diverse representations?
We are delighted to welcome contributors Iain Clark, Amal El-Mohtar, Harry Josephine Giles, and T. L. Huchu. Dr Aishwarya Subramanian will be the academic respondent for this event.
The event will take part via Zoom webinar.
