In partnership with music collective Hen Hoose, a specially curated evening of discussion, live music and celebration for the ARCadia closing gig.
Chaired by pop music expert and musician Dr Matt Brennan, our panel will explore how musicians work together, and the challenges currently facing the creative industries that require a collective approach.
Joining the panel - and performing live - are a number of artists from Hen Hoose, a music production house founded by Tamara Schlesinger, which unites a rich array of talented and award-winning female and non-binary Scottish artists, writers and producers, collaborating to create new music across genres.
PANEL
As director of Tantrum Records, solo artist MALKA and former lead singer/songwriter of 6 Day Riot, Tamara Schlesinger has written and released 8 albums in 16 years. She has enjoyed chart success, extensively toured the UK and North America, played at numerous festivals such as Glastonbury and Bestival and has achieved acclaim from major press. Her music has amassed a vast amount of play on national radio and she regularly syncs her music to domestic TV shows (Skins) US TV shows (Awkward, Finding Carter) and Hollywood films and trailers (Scream 4, 127 Hours).
JAYNE STYNES is a doctoral researcher at Goldsmiths University whose work examines gender-focused initiatives in the contemporary music industry.
PERFORMERS
Joining the panel, and performing live . . .
EMMA POLLOCK is a SAY nominated singer-songwriter, musician and founding member of The Delgados. She is also one of the founders of the independent record label Chemikal Underground. Following The Delgados’ split in 2005, Emma became a solo artist and has since released 3 solo albums; ‘Watch The Firewoks’ (4AD) in 2007, ‘The Law Of Large Numbers’ (Chemikal Underground) in 2010 and ‘In Search of Harperfield’ (Chemikal Underground) in 2016 which was nominated for the SAY Award 2016. The fourth solo album is well underway. Emma has also taken part in many collaborative projects; most notably The Burns Unit featuring amongst others King Creosote & Karine Polwart. 2010 also saw the formation of The Fruit Tree Foundation with Rod Jones (Idlewild), a project commissioned by the Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival to promote awareness of mental health issues within the music industry by producing an album of new material written by 8 Scottish songwriters. Emma has also worked with Glasgow organisation Vox Liminis, which arranges songwriting workshops in Scottish prisons and released its debut album of original material ‘Not Known At This Address’ in May 2018
During the pandemic in 2021, Emma worked as part of the Hen Hoose collaboration setup by artist MALKA, writing a song with Pippa Murphy. The album Equaliser, showcasing work exclusively written and produced by Scottish female/non-binary artists was released earlier this year.
RACHEL AGGS is a multi instrumentalist and songwriter based in Glasgow. Aggs, a prolific specialist in euphoric post-punk, has achieved international acclaim with collaborative touring projects Trash Kit, Shopping and Sacred Paws. Creating zines and co-ordinating workshops that encourage women, non-binary people, and people of colour to form bands, Aggs has galvanised the DIY scene in the UK. Aggs released a solo album on Lost Map records as part of their Visitations residency in 2019 and self released //Tape 1// in 2020. Both releases showcase Aggs’ signature hybrid post-punk/highlife inspirations stripped down to new minimal extremes. Pulsating, electronic beats, coolly-recited lyrical mantras and spindly guitar lines abound in this life affirming music that speaks directly to your heart. https://r4ggs.bandcamp.com
INGE THOMSON is a songwriter and producer whose work often concerns the environment and her place in it. Inge creates large scale multi media shows using natural sounds and complex audio techniques. She is also a musician in Karine Polwart’s multi-award winning band.
