Hackathons originated in the domains of computer science, technology, and product design but the format has been successfully adopted into a variety of educational settings and fields, from global health to global history. This session introduces the hackathon format as a vehicle for active learning. Professor Lisa DeBruine (Psychology) and Dr Hannah-Louise Clark (Economic and Social History) will present case studies that show the versatility of this format and how it can be used to support skills-building, promote inclusion, and kickstart student projects. They will share tips and resources for how to teach with hackathons (including what to avoid) in person and online.
