The interest in Pierre Bourdieu's theoretical and methodological framework within the field of organisation and management studies has increased in recent years. Bourdieu's analytical concepts have been suggested as a useful and strong framework for progressing the field of organisation and management studies (Chudzikowski and Mayerhofer 2011; Emirbayer & Johnson 2008; Tatli et al. 2015; Townley 2014). The pillar concepts of field, habitus and capital – but also social space, position/positioning, illusio, distinction, doxa, hysteresis, symbolic power and misrecognition and their inter-relations enable a distinct approach to organisation and management. There are numerous empirical phenomena that may usefully be analysed from these theoretical and methodological perspectives. These could fall under the broad themes of agency versus structure, organisational identity, power relations, neo-liberalism, public sector reforms and their effects on work/workers/clients, learning in organisations, new managerial practices, emotions and emotional work in organisations, branding, strategy and change, to mention just a few areas relevant for using Bourdieu in research into organisations and management.

The first day and a half of the symposium is open to all researchers who are interested in working with Bourdieu's ideas in the field of organisation and management and researchers who already use Bourdieu in their work to explore their ideas, present work in progress or published work. There will be a self- paying dinner held on the evening of the 29th August which will be a good opportunity for networking and the continuation of research conversations.

The afternoon of the second day will consist of a meeting just for the contributors to the book Societal change and transforming fields: Pierre Bourdieu in studies of Organization, where we will discuss the different book chapters and how we can establish a solid connection between them.

Abstract submission:

If you would like to participate in this symposium we invite you to submit an abstract of maximum 500 words (excluding references). Theoretical or methodological perspectives rooted in Bourdieu's lines of thought that are linked to themes within organization and/or management are welcome. The abstracts may, for example, draw on the following themes:

  • Social space, meta-fields and transformation of public or private sector organisations due to neo-liberalism or knowledge regimes.
  • Strategy and strategizing as organisational phenomena.
  • Positions and positioning related to identity and meaning in organisations.
  • Field, profession, and professional work.
  • Organisations as sites for power and dominance.
  • Transformation of organisations due to technology.
  • Workplace studies focussing on psychosocial or socio-material dimensions.
  • Inequality and diversity in organisations.
  • Organisations as sites for consumption and branding.
  • The changing nature of working and professional lives.
  • Radical change brought about by globalisation and the exigences of neo-liberal modes of governance.

Deadline for abstract submission is Monday 1 July 2019. Please send your abstract to all the conveners.
