This seminar will explore the idea of using a range of approaches to help postgraduate students develop academic writing skills and strategies, so that they can complete their theses on time and, where appropriate, publish during the doctorate. We can discuss the pros and cons of different strategies and their potential at different stages.

Rowena Murray graduated with MA (Hons) from Glasgow University and PhD from Pennsylvania State University, where she taught Rhetoric and Composition. She worked at Glasgow and Strathclyde universities and is now Professor in Education and Director of Research in the School of Education at the University of the West of Scotland and a Principal Fellow of the Advance Higher Education. Her research focuses on academic writing, the subject of her articles and books, including How to Write a Thesis, Writing for Academic Journals, The Handbook of Academic Writing (co-authored with Sarah Moore) and Writing in Social Spaces. Her research has been funded by the British Academy, the Carnegie Trust and the Nuffield Foundation. She runs popular, productive writing retreats for academics, researchers and others through her company, Anchorage Educational Services (anchorage-education.co.uk).

Tea and coffee will be available.

Please note that these CPD workshops are only open to University of Glasgow staff (including Graduate Teaching Assistants / Demonstrators).
