Communities, neighbours and local grassroot organisations mobilised rapidly in the wake of the pandemic lockdown, providing essential lifelines and day to day support for isolated individuals and families across the length and breadth of the country. Local communities are also at the heart of responses to local flooding and other environmental emergencies, providing practical and emotional support for people at times of greatest need.

In partnership with the Campaign for Social Sciences and the Scottish Council on Global Affairs, our third event will reflect on recent examples of community support during such crises and consider questions such as:

  • How can communities respond to shocks at a national/global level?
  • What structures could be put in place to allow rapid targeted support whilst encouraging local/grass roots decision making and maximum subsidiarity.
  • Do we have the legal and government structures – as well as the policymaking expertise – in place to respond to future crises?

With contributions from:

  • Jeane Freeman OBE, former Cabinet Secretary for Health and Sport in the Scottish Government
  • Lorraine McGrath, Chief Executive, Simon Community Scotland
  • Pippa Milne, Chief Executive, Argyll and Bute Council
  • Professor Fabrice Renaud, Professor in Environmental Risk/Community Resilience, University of Glasgow
  • Professor Graeme Roy, Dean of External Engagement, University of Glasgow
  • Professor Michael Russell, former Cabinet Secretary for Government Business and Constitutional Relations of Scotland in the Scottish Government
