Short Description
The course will support students on the Engineering Masters programmes at Glasgow College, UESTC by developing subject specific academic literacy and language skills tailored to the programme they are undertaking. It will target key areas of need across the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, it will include reading-into-seminar speaking skills and how to research, design and deliver poster presentations, supporting on-course study. It will do so by integrating core course spoken and written texts, tasks and language content, and using self and peer work to develop student autonomy.
Timetable
2 X 90-minute seminars each week over 10 weeks
1x 90-minute lecture each week over 4 weeks
1 x 30 min tutorial x 2 = 1 hour (to be arranged with tutors on non-teaching weeks)
Lectures will be timetabled to foreground seminars on the same topic/theme
Requirements of Entry
Students must have met the English language requirements to enter the programme.
Students must be undertaking one of the related registered programmes:
MSc in Embedded Systems and Software Engineering (w UESTC Hainan)

Assessment
Written Assignment: Annotated bibliography and summary of subject specific research literature (as an academic poster with notes) (50%)
Oral Assessment & Presentation: Seminar discussion task on academic sources (20%) + Poster presentation (30%)
Course Aims
This course aims to:
■ develop students' English language, literacy and academic skills for effective participation in their core academic study programme
■ develop critical reading skills, including developing a critical perspective on the use of AI tools when interacting with texts
■ strengthen interactive listening and speaking skills for effective participation in academic seminars, poster presentations and tutorials
■ develop skills in designing and creating written texts in the form of academic posters for their field of study.
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
By the end of this course students will be able to:
1. Use a variety of reading strategies to effectively interact with academic texts.
2. Select, analyse and critically evaluate relevant reading sources.
3. Apply a range of interactional skills to contribute to group seminar discussions.
4. Produce academic posters, using appropriate academic language, style and referencing conventions.
5. Deliver poster presentations of a technical nature, using effective oral skills.
