Short Description

The course will support students undertaking a Master's programme in the field of Engineering at Glasgow College, UESTC by the further development of subject specific academic literacy and language skills tailored to the programme they are undertaking. It will target key areas of need across the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. The overarching focus of this course is the development of research, writing and academic presentation skills related to students' field of study. Course content will integrate programme specific spoken and written texts, tasks and language. Academic literacy criticality will be enhanced by exploring academic integrity and the ethical incorporation of AI in the research and writing process. Self and peer evaluation will be used to develop student autonomy.

Timetable

2 X 90-minute seminars per week across 10 weeks

1x 90-minute lecture each week across 4 weeks

1 x 30 min tutorial x 4 = 2 hours (to be arranged with tutors on non-teaching weeks)

Lectures will be timetabled to foreground seminars on the same topic/theme. Tutorials will be scheduled in lecture weeks.

Students must have completed Academic English and Communication Skills 1

Students must be undertaking one of the related registered programmes:

MSc in Communications and Signal Processing (UESTC)

MSc in Biomedical Engineering (UESTC)

MSc Electronics & Electrical Engineering and Business Management(UESTC)

Assessment

Written Assignment: Subject Specific report (50%), inclusive of planning, draft, bibliography and final submission (all assessed)

Formal Academic Presentation (30%)

Listening into Writing task (in-class test, under exam conditions) (20%)

Course Aims

This course aims to:

■ strengthen students' English language, literacy and academic skills for effective participation in their core academic study programme

■ develop effective independent listening, reading and notetaking skills.

■ develop the skills to present information of a technical nature in written and oral communication

■ develop key academic literacy and research skills for creating written and spoken academic texts, including developing an understanding of academic integrity and critical analysis of the appropriate and ethical use of AI.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Select, analyse and critically evaluate academic sources for use in subject specific academic writing

■ Apply strategies to select, summarise and critically evaluate information from a variety of academic listening sources

■ Deliver formal presentations of a technical nature using appropriate, discipline-specific language, style and referencing conventions 

■ Produce clear, concise written technical documents, using appropriate, discipline-specific language, style and referencing conventions.
