Short Description

This course is designed to develop students' skills in planning and giving public performances of music.

Timetable

■ Individual lessons, normally 12 hours total over 20 weeks, at times arranged between student and teacher

■ 2 individual progress meetings with staff, scheduled at the beginning and end of semester 1

■ 9 taught sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays as scheduled over 10 weeks in MyCampus in semester 1

■ 9 unsupervised rehearsals on Tuesdays and 10 supervised rehearsals on Thursdays as scheduled over 10 weeks in MyCampus in semester 2

Requirements of Entry

Available to second year BMus, MA, and BEng/MEng students in Music who have passed an audition at the beginning of the session, and by arrangement to visiting students who have passed an audition at the beginning of the session.

Assessment

The standard assessments for this course are:

■ Concert Programme, and Commentary (500 words) - 10%

■ Concert (20 minutes stage time) - 40%

■ Group Performance Exercise (15 minutes stage time) and Portfolio (rehearsal diary, PR materials) - 50%

(30% individual grade, 20% group grade)

 

If required, for instance where a disability prevents a student from undertaking a specific method of assessment, the following alternatives are available:

■ There is no alternative to the programme and commentary, but a flexible deadline can be offered as reasonable adjustment (students should follow the usual process for extensions).

■ Reduced audience and alternative performing space as alternatives to concert.

■ Where participation in the performance is not possible, the student's contribution to the management and/or preparation of the performance is assessed.

 

Further reasonable adjustments may be provided where necessary. Students are encouraged to consult with the course convenor.

Course Aims

This course aims to:

■ provide a framework for students to plan and to give musical performances for a live audience in real time, appropriate to their level and range of musicianship 

■ advise on and enable individual instrumental or vocal tuition for the student, to establish a practice discipline for developing their technique

■ enable students to find a role or roles within a collaborative performing group 

■ encourage students to engage with the organisational and entrepreneurial aspects of music making

■ enable students to document the learning processes, and reflect on their experience of them

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to

■ prepare a curated selection of music representative of their musicianship and experience 

■ perform this music effectively to a live audience, with technical precision and stylistic awareness

■ plan, rehearse and realise a collaborative musical project, responding to formative feedback from peers and from teaching staff

■ evaluate performances by listening and responding critically to those of their peers and of professional musicians

■ develop key aspects of stagecraft, administration, management and entrepreneurial skills appropriate for the music and its performance context
