Short Description

In this course we will examine the ways in which the city of Venice has, since the medieval period, been mythologised, imagined, pictured, and consumed, considering the perspectives of both Venetians and the many visitors to the city (including immigrants, traders, diplomats, pilgrims, slaves, and tourists). Particular emphasis will be placed on urbanism, cross-cultural exchange, and visual culture in the late medieval and early modern period (1300-1700).

Timetable

1 x 1hr Lecture; 1 x 1hr Seminar per week over 10 weeks as scheduled on MyCampus.

Requirements of Entry

Available to all students fulfilling requirements for Honours entry into History of Art or MA Creative Arts and Industries, and by arrangement to visiting students or students of other Honours programmes.

Assessment

The standard assessments for this course are:

■ Essay (2000 words) - 60%

■ Object Report (1500 words) - 30%

■ Seminar presentation accompanied by script or PowerPoint slides (5 minutes) - 10%

 

If required, for instance where a disability prevents a student from undertaking a specific method of assessment, the following alternatives are available:

■ There is no alternative to the essay, but a flexible deadline can be offered as reasonable adjustments (students should follow the usual process for extensions)

Course Aims

This course aims to:

■ investigate the role of art and architecture in the formation of urban identity

■ provide students with a grounding in the visual and material culture of Renaissance Venice

■ offer students the opportunity to engage with cross-cultural and environmental approaches to the analysis of visual and material culture

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ demonstrate a working knowledge of historical and cultural developments in the city of Venice and its surrounding territories between 1300 and 1700 

■ comprehend the main lines of critical and art historical discourse that developed around the art and architecture of Renaissance Venice

■ identify and deploy cross-cultural and environmental methodologies in the analysis of visual and material culture
