Short Description
This course introduces students to the creative and commercial conventions of short film screenwriting.

Requirements of Entry
Available to all students fulfilling requirements for Honours entry into Film and Television Studies, and by arrangement to visiting students or students of other Honours programmes who qualify under the University's 25% regulation.

Assessment
The standard assessments for this course are:
■ Short film treatment (1000 words) - 20%
■ Short film screenplay (3000 words) - 80%

■ There are no alternatives to the assessments, but flexible deadlines can be offered as reasonable adjustments (students should follow the usual process for extensions)

Course Aims
The course aims to:
■ develop students' creative writing skills in the discipline of short film screenwriting
■ introduce students to particular commercial and institutional aspects of the script development process
■ develop students' analytical skills in relation to the appreciation and evaluation of storytelling techniques in film
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
By the end of this course students will be able to:
■ produce creative work through the discipline of short film screenwriting
■ demonstrate and understand, through practical experience, some of the commercial and institutional factors affecting the short film script development process
■ identify the dramatic techniques employed by other screenwriters/filmmakers and apply them to their own creative writing
