Short Description

A six-week placement inside active University of Glasgow engineering research groups working at the frontier of engineering.

Timetable

Full time between 22nd June - 31st July 2026 (6 weeks). Students will be expected to be in their allocated research lab/space from 09:30 - 16:30 each weekday.

Requirements of Entry

Eligible students must have ideally completed the 2nd year of their Undergraduate Degree in an engineering discipline, majoring in a subject related to the research project area. A good grasp of written and verbal English is required (GPA of 3.0 for US students; IELTS 6.0 with no subtest below 5.5). Background knowledge of computer programming is desirable but not essential. Course not available to University of Glasgow students.

Assessment

The course assessment has 3 components: the supervisor's assessment based on the research logbook, research performance, attitude and participation ("Project Output" 20%); an oral presentation (25%) which takes place during the last week; and a project report (55%) which is submitted one week after completion of the 6-week project.

Course Aims

The aims of the course are to provide experience in the planning and execution of a short research project, data analysis and interpretation, the production of a written report, and presenting and discussing findings to staff and peers.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

1. Propose a preliminary list of goals to be achieved during the project in collaboration with the project supervisor;

2. Critically analyse the literature related to the research project;

3. Deliver a clear, well-constructed oral presentation describing their research to their peers;

4. Compose a clear and concise report summarising their findings and the state of research in their chosen field.
