Short Description

The proposed course will be offered to streamline language provision in CEES and facilitate flexible learning (for example existing Russian language provision or enabling the provision of additional languages where there is sufficient demand). It is specifically designed as a course to enhance the language skills of the students in the relevant languages of the region. It is specifically designed for students who have already completed one semester of language learning. The course focuses on grammar an information retrieval skills, a confident self-expression and general subject-related vocabulary.

Timetable

Classes will normally be 4 hours per weeks at times to be arranged, normally 2 X 2hr seminars over 11 weeks in Semester 2

It is specifically designed for students who have already completed one semester of language learning (e.g. CEES5093)

two-hour written paper (worth 70%),

Course Aims

This course provides students with intensive language tuition over one semester of study. The course is taught to enable students to acquire sufficient linguistic knowledge and translation skills to be able to read social science texts in the original language and to use these in their study of social science disciplines. At the end of the course the students will have attained the necessary competence in order to use original language sources competently with the help of a dictionary, so that they can undertake more advanced research programmes or employment in the field of Central and East European Studies.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:

· read and translate standard social science texts with the use of a dictionary;

· write a full summary of these texts in English;

· give a brief, basic presentation about their research;

· make effective use of dictionaries and other reference sources;

· follow a basic oral presentation
in the original language about social science topics.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
