Short Description

Access Skills, Support and Progression (SS&P) is designed to improve Access students' prospects of success on the Access programme and aid students' transition into higher education. It is a core element of the Access programme, which students complete alongside their two Access Subjects. SS&P introduces students to key academic skills, builds confidence in independent study and guides students through the process of applying for university.

Timetabled online teaching (live/synchronous): 12 hours

Online teaching delivered anytime (asynchronous): 24 hours

Timetabled on campus teaching: 10 hours

Requirements of Entry

Students must be studying on the University of Glasgow Access to Higher Education Programme, studying two Access subject courses alongside this course (course codes listed in section 8).

Assessment

Written assessment evidencing students' understanding of how their personal qualities, skills and knowledge relate to university study (or equivalent relating to other positive destinations such as study at college or employment) (ILO 3) (600 words) (40%).

Written assessment assessing students reflective learning skills, understanding of reflective learning approaches and understanding of relevant academic and personal development skills - (ILO 1, ILO2) (1200 words) (60%)

Course Aims

The aims of this course are to:

■ Introduce the key personal development and academic skills required for university-level study.

■ Offer students the opportunity to develop reflective learning skills to support their learning and participation on Access, and their progression to undergraduate study.

■ Provide guidance and support for students to complete an appropriate application for undergraduate study (or equivalent positive destination).

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

1. Identify and demonstrate the academic and personal development skills necessary for university-level study.

2. Compare and analyse strategies in key academic and personal skills using reflective learning approaches.

3. Evidence the academic and personal skills related to their intended positive destination.
