Short Description
Further experience in the use of GIS for applications, including development of tools and interfaces within GIS, with optional opportunities for field-based or conference-based applied learning.
Timetable
All classes will take place during semester 2. A significant component of this course is a self-study exercise.
Optional participation in field-based or conference-based applied learning activities (e.g. field class or relevant professional events such as GISRUK) may be offered, subject to availability. Alternative on-campus or online activities will be provided to ensure all students can meet the course requirements.

Co-requisites
GEOG5019 Principles of GIS or equivalent background in GIS.
Assessment
A report on the applied GIS project (30%)
Directed practical tasks on programming (40%)
Group verbal report on the applied GIS task (20%)
Products of the applied GIS task (10%).
Course Aims
One part focuses on the use of GIS in an applied project using the concept of a Virtual Work Placement. Other parts look application development within GIS.
The teaching aims are to:
■ Give experience of an applied GIS project in a simulated work based environment;
■ Expose students to OpenSource GIS;
■ Give experience of developing tools and interfaces within a GIS;
■ Give experience of working with a group to solve a task using GIS.
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
Having completed this course students will be able to:
■ Use OpenSource GIS and related tools;
■ Develop simple programmes, tools and user interfaces within a GIS environment;
■ Carry out an applied GIS project with minimal supervision;
■ Write reports on applied GIS analysis;
■ Work within a group to solve a problem requiring use of GIS within a limited time frame.
