University of Glasgow welcomes Orascom scholars

Six students, whose studies have been made possible by funding from one of the world’s largest telecoms firms, have arrived in Glasgow.

The project will see them complete a one year business masters degree, before returning to Egypt to help with the development of the Egyptian economy.

The University welcomed the Orascom Telecom Scholarship Programme students by hosting a reception in the Principal’s lodgings.

Sir Muir Russell, Principal of the University of Glasgow, said: “We are very pleased that the Orascom scholars have arrived in Glasgow and are settling in well to the University and the city.

“We would like to thank Orascom Telecom for their generosity in establishing these scholarships.  We are delighted to have established such a beneficial partnership with the organisation.”

The students are studying business administration, human resource management, international trade and finance, international accounting and financial management, economics, banking and finance and investment banking and finance.

Business administration student John Fayez W. Zaki said: “I would like to thank all the people responsible for the Orascom Telecom Scholarship Programme. I am grateful for the scholarship trust to offer me such an opportunity.

“Coming to Glasgow to do an MBA is exhilarating. I have fallen in love with the city, the university and definitely the course. I have met so many interesting people from different backgrounds and professions. It is definitely a chance for personal growth and professional development which hopefully will benefit my country when I go back.

“Although, my plans for the future are not yet finalised, my mind is set to work for a good cause. I want to help protecting the environment and I would like to work with the Egyptian government or an international organization to enhance the environmental performance in Egypt."

Orascom Telecom, led by Naguib Sawiris, have invested more than £140,000 to give the Egyptian students the opportunity to study at the University of Glasgow.

On completion of their one year business Masters degree, the scholars will return to Egypt to help with the development of the north African country.

At the time of the launch, Mr Sawiris said: “The University of Glasgow has an international reputation and we would like to give some talented students the opportunity to study at world-class institution.

“The business training they will receive in Glasgow will stand them in excellent stead for the future. 

“Setting up a scholarship programme like this is an excellent way of providing first-class training for young people from my country. Once they have completed the one year Masters, they will be in a position to really add value to Egypt.

“I am delighted that Orascom Telecom and the University of Glasgow can work together on this exciting scheme.”
