The six research themes within the SDN are:

  • Energy
  • Social science and sustainable behaviours
  • Environmental and technological risk
  • Water
  • Biodiversity
  • Environmental regulation and governance

In 2011/12 the SDN hosted talks from the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) and the Chief Scientific Adviser for Europe, Anne Glover, as well as running a two day course for postgraduate research students on Sustainability, Impact and Engagement.

The 2011/12 SDN lecture series kicked off with a lecture by renowned environmental policy maker Professor Hironori Hamanaka (Institute for Global Environmental Strategies - IGES) which was co-funded by the Consulate General of Japan.
