Time: 13:00 - 18:00
Venue: Senate Room
Category: Academic events, Student events

Mark your calendars - it’s time to kick off celebrations of one of the University of Glasgow’s most influential alumni, Henry Dyer, and the links between the City and Japan.

Almost 150 years ago, Dyer, a protege of Rankine and graduate of the University of Glasgow, set up the Imperial School of Engineering in Tokyo. This later became part of the University of Tokyo, and resulted in the creation of the oldest Electronic Engineering Department in the world.

We’re delighted to invite you to the Henry Dyer Memorial Event on 23rd September, bringing together leading professors from both universities, industry, and government. The afternoon will highlight the historic links and showcase existing collaborations and exchanges, and also provide information on Fellowship and Grant opportunities.

Introduced by Prof. Sir Anton Muscatelli, speakers will include Prof. Tatsuya Okubo, Dean of the School of Engineering, and Prof. Yoshiaki Nakano, of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Systems, both from the University of Tokyo.

Dr Saeko Yazaki, lecturer in Religious Studies at the University of Glasgow will give a historical overview of Dyer’s life and the links between the two countries. Speakers will also share their experience of Fellowships in Japan.
