Battlefield & Conflict Archaeology MLitt
The Masters in Battlefield & Conflict Archaeology specialises in the archaeological approaches to battlefields and other aspects of conflict archaeology.
- Battlefields, both ancient and modern, have come to be accepted as important elements of the world’s cultural heritage, and this programme provides an ideal grounding if you are interested in the archaeological potential of these fields of conflict.
- The programme is based within the Centre for Battlefield Archaeology, which has earned a reputation as an international centre of excellence for the study of battlefields and other archaeological signs of human conflict.
- We are actively engaged in a number of field projects, both within the UK and overseas. Past and present projects include the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 in South Africa, the Jacobite rebellions in Scotland and an archaeological evaluation of British battlefields. You will be encouraged to take part in our ongoing projects.
- You will also take fieldtrips to a number of battlefields relevant to your studies including Bannockburn and Culloden.
- Our programme has strong links with the University's Hunterian Museum, giving you access to primary source material, including objects and archives.

For the MLitt you will produce a dissertation on a specialist topic agreed with your supervisor.

Optional courses
You need to choose three options in all; two options are selected from the following

- British battlefields
- Introduction to forensic archaeology.
One option is selected from any of the specialist courses offered in the Archaeology or War Studies programmes.
Career prospects
The programme provides an excellent platform for you to move onto PhD studies and an academic career. The value now placed on battlefield and conflict sites also means that opportunities in relevant areas of cultural resource management have also increased.

Visa requirements and proof of English language level
It is a visa requirement to provide information on your level of English based on an internationally recognised and secure English language test. All test reports must be no more than 2 years old. A list of these can be found on the UK Border Agency website. If you have never taken one of these tests before, you can get an initial idea of your level by using the Common European Framework self-assessment grid which gives you a level for each skill (e.g. listening B1/writing B2 etc.) However, please note that this is not a secure English language test and it is not sufficient evidence of your level of English for visa requirements.
If you require a Tier 4 student visa, your qualification must be one of the secure English language tests accepted by UK Border Agency:
