Arts & Media Informatics

Degrees, combinations and UCAS codes

MA

Arts and media informatics studies how information and communication technology (ICT) and digital media shapes the way we understand ourselves and each other in the past, present and future. We are continually shaped by technology but we also shape it; it can have positive and negative effects, be used well or inappropriately. We can see it as a tool to do things more efficiently or as a lens that changes our perspective on the world. The digital age poses challenges for our economic, social, cultural and political systems and our concepts of rights, privacy, trust and responsibility. By taking a human perspective on these issues and the ways in which we can use ICT in the arts and humanities you will be exploring an exciting, challenging and complex world.

What will I study?

Initially you will be introduced to a wide range of computing concepts and applications within the digital humanities, such as website development, databases, digitisation and electronic texts, examining their impact on the development of a variety of disciplines.

In the following year you will expand on these critical skills and will acquire an understanding of standards and best practices including

  • 3D modelling
  • Artificial intelligence
  • Digital preservation.

If you progress to Honours level, a broader theoretical understanding is provided along with an opportunity to study the creation, application and use of particular technologies in more detail, including enterprise, creativity and citizenship, multimedia, digital images, electronic texts and cyberculture. You will also have the opportunity to undertake your own research in the form of a dissertation.

How will I learn?

Teaching is delivered through a combination of lectures and seminars, practical computer labs and visits that will enable you to combine theory and practice in a varied and engaging programme. Particular emphasis is placed on individual project work that develops skills of independence, creativity and time management.
