Biography

Professor Konstantinos Gerasimidis is Professor of Clinical Nutrition. He has graduated in Nutrition and Dietetics and completed his postgraduate studies in Clinical Nutrition. During his doctoral research at the University of Glasgow, he explored the effect of exclusive enteral nutrition on the gut microbiota and nutritional status of children with Crohn’s disease. He holds an honorary contract as Clinical Paediatric Nutrition Scientist with the National Health Service at Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

Affiliations and memberships

  • He was previously the Allied Health Professional representative in the Nutrition Committee of the European Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN).
  • He was faculty member of the Dietetic Working Group of European Crohn’s and Colitis Organisation (D-ECCO)
  • He is the Secretary elect of the Special Interest Group in Clinical Paediatric Nutrition Group of the European Society of Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN).
  • He is the Chair of the Clinical Malnutrition Group of ESPGHAN
  • He is State Registered Dietitian in Greece

Research interests

Professor Gerasimidis main research focuses on two areas:

Disease-associated malnutrition

Professor Gerasimidis’ clinical research investigates the link between malnutrition and clinical outcomes in adults and children with acute and chronic disease. He is particularly interested in the screening and assessment of disease-associated malnutrition and its impact on patients’ clinical outcomes. He has been instrumental in the development of the Paediatric Yorkhill Malnutrition Score (PYMS) which is endorsed for clinical use by NHS Scotland, http://www.knowledge.scot.nhs.uk/home.aspx,

Professor Gerasimidis was the local principal investigator of the European malnutrition screening study sponsored by the European Society of Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN). His current research explores how nutritional interventions can improve clinical outcomes in disease-associated malnutrition. Ongoing research projects include:

1)      Micronutrient deficiencies and post-operative outcomes in children with congenital heart defects

2)      Nutritional issues and management in children with phenylketonuria

3)      The Children European Estimator of Weight (CEEW) a weight prediction equations for use in paediatric accident and emergency settings and critical care.

4)      The development and validation of the infant early nutrition warning score

5)      Dietary intake and eating habits in elderly hospitalised patients.

Diet and gut microbiota interaction in health and disease

Professor Gerasimidis also leads a laboratory team which explores the role of gut microbiota and its interaction with diet in the onset, propagation and management of acute and chronic conditions. He has a strong interest in exploring the effect of habitual diet, elimination diets and artificial nutritional support on the gut microbiota of children and adults with inflammatory bowel disease. With clinical colleagues from the National Health Service, they have developed a novel diet (Crohn’s Disease Treatment by Eating or CD-TREAT) to treat Crohn’s disease through manipulation of the gut microbiota. He also explores the role of gut microbiota in other non-communicable conditions such as obesity, juvenile arthritis and intestinal failure. He is the local academic principal investigator of the STOP-colitis study; a UK multicentre intervention study aiming to treat ulcerative colitis using faecal material transplantations.

His laboratory team holds in-house expertise in characterising the microbiota composition and functionality using molecular microbiology and chromatographic techniques. His current research encompasses clinical trials, in-vitro experiments and animal models, in collaborations with clinical colleagues from the National Health Service and other internal and external academic establishments. He is the co-ordinator of a cross-disciplinary research group with a special interest in Bacteria, Immunology, Nutrition, Gastroenterology and Omics (BINGO) group. Ongoing research projects encompass:

1)      The role of gut microbiota in children with coeliac disease

2)      Gut microbiota in obesity. Cause or effect?

3)      The effect of structured exercise sessions on the gut microbiota of women in increased cardiovascular risk

4)      Fibre and fermentation capacity of people with inflammatory bowel disease

Research funding

His work is funded by various charities (e.g. Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity, Catherine McEwan Foundation, Crohn’s in Childhood Research Association, Crohn’s and Colitis UK, Europe, research councils in UK (e.g. Medical Research Council), the National Institute of Health Research in the UK, industry (e.g. Nestle, Nutricia, Mead Johnson Nutrition) and health professional bodies (e.g. British Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, the European Crohn’s and Colitis Organisation) and the Scottish Enterprise.

Current research team

His current research team consists of four postdoctoral research associates, one research associate and a team of 9 PhD students.
