Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz was established in 1477 and in the 20th Century was named after the printer Johannes Gutenberg. It is one of the largest universities in Germany and is one of the most prestigious German institutions, particularly in natural sciences and economics.

Mainz is a city of 205,000 inhabitants in the centre-west of Germany. In antiquity, Mainz was a Roman fort city that formed part of the northernmost frontier of the Roman Empire. The region is one of Germany’s centres of wine production.
