In the week of 15 April 2024, accompanied by Dr Xiang Li, the School’s Associate Director of Development and Regional Lead for East Asia, Professor Eleanor Shaw embarked on her first visit to China as Head of School and engaged with various key stakeholders to move forward our strategic plans. During the trip, Eleanor signed two Memorandum of Agreements (MoA) with Zhejiang University and Peking University, two world leading institutions, for dual degree and student exchange collaborations. These formal arrangements allow students from Zhejiang and Peking University to claim their academic achievements from their Glasgow experiences and receive recognition from their home institutions.

As part of the visit, Eleanor held a drinks reception in Beijing on 18 April. The reception saw over 30 alumni volunteers joining the get-together, listening to School’s updates and achievements, and participating in an Adam Smith-themed fun quiz. Participants were certainly very competitive and strived to impress the audience. After an intensive round of quiz questions, a group of five participants managed to achieve a 9.5-point score (out of 11) and scooped the winning prizes! Following a traditional group photo, Dr Xiang Li took the opportunity to thank Beijing Alumni Association Board members and alumni volunteers for their continued support to the business school’s development journey over the past decade, and toast to the next decade for a more vibrant and engaged alumni community in Beijing and China.

Asked about her first experience in China, Eleanor said, ‘I loved visiting China and I cannot wait to back’.

Professor Shaw started her role on the 7 August 2023, and joined the University of Glasgow from Strathclyde University where she was an Associate Principal.

An entrepreneurial leader with more than 25 years’ of experience working with entrepreneurs, her entrepreneurship research has informed the design and delivery of entrepreneurial education, influenced entrepreneurial policy, and guided the development of successful growth interventions which have supported the scale up of numerous Scottish ventures. She was awarded an OBE in 2022 in recognition of her services to entrepreneurship and education.
