From 14th – 16th May 2014, the University of Glasgow will host the prestigious Universitas 21  AGM and Presidential Symposium 2014. This important global event will bring together the leaders of some of the world’s most influential universities. The U21 network has a membership of 27 leading research-intensive universities worldwide, and delegates will include guests from India, China, Korea, Hong Kong, the US, South Africa, Australia and the UK. This will be the first time that the University of Glasgow hosts this auspicious gathering.

The University of Glasgow is a co-founder of U21, which is the leading global network of research-intensive universities. U21 focuses its activity on supporting students, improving educational opportunities globally, and international collaboration. Between us, U21 enrols 1.3 million students and employs 220,000 staff, with a budgetary turnover of $25 billion.

The U21 Presidential Symposium on Thursday 15th May will consider the role of ‘The University of the Future’, exploring the effective development of our talent and examining the impact of online learning and international campuses on Higher Education.  Technology continues to play a transformative role at universities around the globe and represents an area of special interest for many delegates. Guest speakers at the event are Glasgow alumnus Phil Smith, CEO of Cisco Systems UK & Ireland, and Simon Nelson, CEO of FutureLearn online platform.

The U21 Presidential Symposium will be streamed live from the University website for staff, U21 members and the public: the link will go live on the day of the event.

The aim of the events is to stimulate high-level debate among participating presidents as leaders of globally-engaged research universities. It’s a rare opportunity for senior leaders to meet and discuss the shared issues and challenges of university management. In addition to the presidents’ conference, the University of Glasgow will host a meeting of senior academic leaders responsible for research and graduate study at member universities.

The U21 events also include a U21 Student Summit, which will welcome 45 student leaders from around the world, to discuss how universities can best prepare students for their future lives. The Summit will conclude with an opportunity for students to present their ideas to the U21 Presidents and senior staff at the Symposium.
