A round-up of University news and events from across the Campuses

Christmas discounts on campus

The University of Glasgow Gift Shop is offering a 20% staff discount for a limited period pre-Christmas.  The shop is organising the annual staff Christmas shopping afternoon. With 20% off everything in the shop, and mulled wine and mince pies on hand, it is billed as a delicious way to celebrate pay day and tick some items off of your Christmas list!

This year it will be held from 12-4pm on Friday 28th November, but for those unable to visit on the day, the 20% discount offer will extend until 5pm on Tuesday 2nd December, which is also for the benefit of colleagues based away from the main building. Just ask for Christmas discount at the till and show your staff card.

John Smith's bookshop is also offering a staff discount. The company's Paul Mark said: "Its that time of year again where we start our Christmas offers at the bookshop. Once again we are offering University staff a 20% of voucher to give them a much bigger staff discount as a thank you for their support throughout the year." Members of staff just need to print and present the voucher and show their GUID.

Communicative rhythms in brain and behaviour

Rhythm is all around us, in music, poetry, speech; and within us, in the brain.

Brain Rhythms RS event flyerRhythms in Scotland is an interdisciplinary network founded in 2012 with Royal Society of Edinburgh funding. Highlights from our conference and workshops have recently been published in a theme issue of Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B:

Communicative rhythms in brain and behaviour including articles on rhythm in joint music-making and conversation, speech timing, EEG frequency-tagging and entrainment to music, speech and auditory disorders following Parkinson’s and cerebellar damage, as well as whether being bounced to a beat makes babies more cooperative and why some people can’t dance to the beat.

We'd like to invite you to a special gathering of the network to mark the publication of the theme issue and discuss future plans. We are keen to involve all colleagues interested in rhythm, whether in music, literature, psychology, neuroscience, linguistics, speech and music therapy, education, or any other area.

Programme: There will be talks from Fred Cummins (University College Dublin), Nigel Fabb (University of Strathclyde), and a performance from award-winning poet Hannah Silva. Over a glass of wine there will be a chance to discuss plans for the network, talks, interdisciplinary training possibilities, and collaborative ventures.

Please RSVP to indicate whether:

  • you can attend the event (to help us estimate numbers for catering)
  • you can’t attend but would like to join the mailing list for future networking events

We hope to see you on 25 November!

With all best wishes Rachel Smith, Tamara Rathcke, Fred Cummins, Katie Overy, Sophie Scott (editors)
