What better way to celebrate the festive season than with Master Brewer Keith Lugton. At this Cafe Scientifique event, Keith will describe the basics of brewing science – the biochemistry, microbiology and engineering that combine to bring us the perfect pint. He’ll be exploring how technological changes have affected the world of brewing and explain something of the brewer’s art – that special, added ingredient of knowledge and experience that helps him handle the challenges – and opportunities - that brewing can throw at him.

Cafe Scientifique is a forum where anyone can come to explore the latest ideas in science and technology. Regular meetings take place in cafes, bars, restaurants and even theatres, but always outside a traditional academic context. 

Master Brewer

Master BrewerKeith Lugton is Product and Process Development Manager at C&C Group plc, which operates from Tennent Caledonian Breweries Ltd, Wellpark Brewery, Glasgow.  

He has been a Master Brewer since 1989 and has worked in the brewing industry since 1977.

His career started at the Heriot Brewery in Edinburgh, then in 1985 he moved to the Glasgow Brewery.

He spent many years travelling across Europe when the company was owned by Anheuser Busch InBev.  Keith is a Fellow of the Institute of Brewing and Distilling and currently Chairman of the Scottish Section of the IBD. He is a member of the IBD - Maltsters Association of Great Britain's Malt and Barley working parties and a member of the Advisory Board of Management for the International Centre for Brewing and Distilling at Herriot Watt University in Edinburgh.  In recent years he has been heavily involved in cider development in the UK , Italy and the USA. He currently lives in Glasgow with his wife Ruth, their daughters having flown the coop.
