University of Glasgow student Nicole Hendry is set to embark on a sponsored Arctic husky trek to raise money for charity.

Following the death of her father from lung and kidney cancer, when Nicole was just 12 years old, and the diagnosis of her mother with breast cancer – who has recently been given the all-clear – Nicole decided to try to raise money for a cancer charity.

Her gruelling adventure, in memory of her father, will begin on January 30th, lasting for five days before she wraps up on February 4th.

The English Language and Scottish Literature student, who will begin her 3rd year at the University in September, has even managed to organise her trip around her course to avoid missing any classes.

She plans to travel to Sweden, where her adventure will begin: "I am starting in Kiruna, Lapland - the most northern town in Sweden - before travelling to the northern tip of the country. It's a five day round trip before I'm back in Kiruna again, and I'll be travelling at least seven hours a day. I'll have to carry everything for me and the dogs - everything for camping, cooking, cleaning and eating.

"I'm not good at all in the cold, but I really wanted something that would be a true challenge to really push my own limits. Although I've signed up alone, there will be other people on similar fundraising treks so hopefully I won’t be too alone."

By covering all the transport, kit and administration costs herself, all the donations that Nicole receives will go directly to Cancer Research UK.  Her initial target is £1000, but Nicole hopes to adjust this upward as her fundraising efforts increase.

Nicole said: "Cancer Research UK are a fantastic charity who are behind some incredible advancements and it is a cause very close to my heart."

The work of Cancer Research UK has helped improve survival rates for cancer over the last decades.  In the 1970s, just a quarter of people survived, whereas now that figure is half. Cancer Research UK’s ambition is to get to a stage where three quarters of patients are surviving within the next 20 years.
