Charles Estienne was the third son of the famous French printer Henri Estienne or Stephanus and received his medical doctorate at Paris in 1542. It was during his period as lecturer in anatomy at the Faculty of Medicine from 1544-47 that his anatomy book was published. Many of the nearly sixty full-page woodcut illustrations are signed by the artist Jollat, but their quality is uneven and the anatomical information they convey is unclear and fundamentally Galenic.

De dissectione partium corporis humani... Paris, Simon de Colines, 1545. pp281. [Ab.1.8]

In the illustration on display depicting a seated woman with abdomen open, it is obvious that the central area is printed from a wood-block insert. Although there are several original observations made in the text, they are vitiated by the poor detail of the drawings.
