Charles Estienne was the third son of the famous French
printer Henri Estienne or Stephanus and received his medical doctorate at Paris
in 1542. It was during his period as lecturer in anatomy at the Faculty of
Medicine from 1544-47 that his anatomy book was published. Many of the nearly
sixty full-page woodcut illustrations are signed by the artist Jollat, but their
quality is uneven and the anatomical information they convey is unclear and
fundamentally Galenic.
