Navigating the intricacies of health services can be a daunting task, particularly when resources are limited and competing needs and demands must be balanced. In order to provide safe, high-quality care, Scottish Government reports have identified a need for health and social care professionals to enhance their leadership and management capabilities. This course offers a unique opportunity for those in the healthcare field to develop their understanding of management and leadership theories, and to hone their skills to excel in a career in health service management. Throughout this course, learners will gain the necessary tools to be adaptable, creative, innovative and analytical, enabling them to stay ahead of the curve in an ever-evolving healthcare landscape.

- Assess the role of management and leadership in UK health services;
- Evaluate the organisation and delivery of health care services, including interorganisational issues;
- Critically appraise the principles underlying the development of health services and health service policy;
- Evaluate and apply the principles of quality assurance, clinical governance, and risk management in health services.

This course is designed to equip learners with the skills to critically assess the role of management and leadership in health services. It will cover the following topics:

Week 2: Human Elements of Healthcare Management
Week 3: The Nature of Health Care Managment
Week 4: Governance & Accountability
Week 5: Data Usage & Reliability
Week 6: Introduction to Systems Approaches
Week 7: Understanding Policy Making
Week 8: Managing Change
Week 9: Healthcare Economics
Week 10: Consolidation of Learning
Assessment
- Weekly Quiz (optional)
Learners will take a formative quiz each week to consolidate their understanding of the course content.
- Summative Assessments (100%) (optional)
- Learners will produce a 500-word bulletin on a relevant topic. Due in Week 6.
- Learners will produce a 1,500-word essay. Due in Week 11.
Learners who choose to submit these assessments will be awarded 10 Academic Credits towards a relevant Master’s degree at the University of Glasgow.
Meet The Team
This course is designed and delivered by Sue Campbell.
Sue is a Lecturer in the School of Medicine at the University of Glasgow, teaching on Health Service Management, Public Health and Global health programmes. Sue has 18 years of work experience in public health in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Funding: If you are based in Scotland and/or work for an organisation based in Scotland, you are eligible for a fully funded place on this course, meaning you can upskill free of charge.

Entry requirements
It is suggested that learners on this course are educated to at least Undergraduate level and have an IELTS equivalent of 6.5. Learners will not be asked to prove their academic or professional history.
How to Apply
Stage 1: Submit Notification of Interest Form
When applications open, notify us of your interest in applying for a course. You will then receive an email with a link to the Admissions Form.
Stage 2: Submit Admissions Form
Submit an Admissions Form using the same email address that you used in your Notification of Interest Form. If you are granted an SFC funded place on the course, you will receive an Access Account Notification email (AAN) including instructions on how to complete Academic Registration.
The submission of this form does not guarantee you a place on the course. You will hear from us regarding our decision in approximately four weeks.
Stage 3: Complete Academic Registration
Once complete, your place on the course will be secured.
Upskilling learners do not have to complete Financial Registration or manually enrol. This is processed by the Upskilling team.
Courses have a limited number of spaces. Thus, applications may close before the advertised deadline. To avoid disappointment, it is encouraged that you complete Stages 1-3 of your application at the earliest opportunity.
