Glasgow University
Women's Hockey Club

With six competitive outdoor teams, a huge Development squad and two indoor teams, Glasgow University Women's Hockey Club (GUWHC) is one of the largest women's clubs in the country.

As a club, we aim to promote a high standard of hockey for all abilities while ensuring it is fun, exciting and sociable for all our members.

Performance Programme

Our performance programme enables athletes to achieve a world-class degree and perform to the best of their ability. As part of the programme, athletes will receive:

  • Highly qualified coaching from a Head Coach with extensive experience in Scottish Hockey
  • Comprehensive Strength & Conditioning programme delivered by a certified specialist in our premium sports and fitness facility, designed to improve physical capacities and reduce injuries in order to maximise sporting potential and performance
  • Performance Mindset workshops to develop players' psychological flexibility and enhance team performance
  • Nutritional advice to optimise performance and recovery, and to prevent injury
  • Bursaries and academic support to help manage the demands of competing whilst undertaking their degree. This can include a number of services such as:
    • Financial support
    • Free access to University sport facilities
    • Free UofG Sport membership
    • Access to University Sports Science at a discounted rate
    • Support with accommodation

Competing

We have six competitive teams that play in both Wednesday and Saturday leagues. Our 1st XI currently compete in the highest division of Scottish Hockey in the Premiership league at the weekend, and BUCS Premier (North) on Wednesdays, with our 2nd XI in the Scottish Hockey Championship and BUCS Scottish Tier 1.

Ours 3s, 4s, 5s, and 6s compete in local West District leagues at the weekend and in BUCS Scottish Tier 3, 4 and 5 respectively.

In addition to our competitive teams, we have a large Development squad who play in friendlies against other West of Scotland based universities. Every Wednesday we also have a game session for girls looking to improve their game play.

Training

Our training sessions are held at Garscube Sports Complex and the National Hockey Centre at the following times, and are shared between our seven teams:

  • Monday — 16:30-18:00 and 18:00-19:30
  • Tuesday — 17:00-19:00
  • Wednesday — 11:30-13:00
  • Thursday — 16:30-18:00, 20:00-21:00 (National Hockey Centre) and 20:30-22:00

The club has qualified and experienced coaching staff for our 1XI and 2XI, as well as experienced members of the Men's and Women's clubs helping coach the remaining teams and Development squad.

Social

Within the GUWHC we recognise the need to play hard as well as work hard, so we have various social events, usually hosted alongside the Men's club, throughout the academic year.

These events place members into teams which allows the opportunity to get to know players across the whole club that you may not normally socialise with. The final event of the year is Club Dinner, normally hosted by the Union after May exams, in which we celebrate the end of another hockey season as well as club and team achievements.

Every year, the Men's and Women's club also run a tour to an exciting European destination. Previous tours have visited Prague, Budapest, and Barcelona. This is a fantastic week held after the May examinations to allow one final get-together before summer starts.

We cater for all abilities, so the competitive yet social GUWHC really does have something for everyone.
