Scottish Centre for Ecology & the Natural Environment (SCENE) Phase 1 - CP01/496

Phase 1 of the replacement field station at Rowardennan has been completed.  This phase provides the research facilities for the University Field Station.  The accommodation includes fish tank areas, laboratories and offices together with bedroom accommodation for residential courses.

The building was designed to achieve very high sustainable standards and has been awarded an Excellent design rating by BREEAM, which is the highest possible.  This was achieved by the building fabric having a heavy thermal mass construction, using sustainable materials such as natural stone walling and slate roofing together with cedar cladding.  Natural ventilation was adopted, and heating is provided by a geothermal system, comprising of boreholes drilled into rock under the site.  This system complements the heating and hot water systems which are boosted by electricity.

Funding of the Project was by means of SFC SRIF grant together with a grant from Scottish Enterprise.
