EUROPEAN-LATIN AMERICAN CONFERENCE OF THEORETICAL AND APPLIED MECHANICS (ELACTAM 2024)

January 29-February 2, 2024, University of Havana, Havana, Cuba

The objective of this meeting is to facilitate the exchange of ideas and experiences between researchers, at all career stages, from Latin America with their colleagues from Europe, Asia, and North America. We hope that this meeting generates a cordial and relaxed atmosphere for work and exchange. This will be the third conference focused on topics of mechanics and its applications.

The conference will consist of expository talks with a duration of 20 - 30 min each. We expect to have a series of lectures devoted to different research fields of theoretical and applied mechanics. The main topics of the conference are (but are not limited to):

  • Fluid mechanics
  • Solid mechanics
  • Vibrations and wave propagation
  • New materials and material modelling
  • Biomaterials and material modelling
  • Modelling of green/renewable materials
  • Composite materials
  • Computational mechanics

There exist antecedents of exchanges between Latin American research and outside groups, which have been developed because of this type of scientific meetings. Lectures will be invited from prominent and internationally recognized researchers from Latin American and European countries. Scientists from outside Europe and Latin America are also cordially invited to participate. In addition to invited talks, participants are encouraged to give contributed talks within the general scope of the meeting.

Conference status and submission of the abstracts
If you want to be informed about the planning and status of the conference, kindly send an email to the organizers.

The template for abstract submission can be downloaded here (PASSWORD: Elactam24). The deadline is December 18th, 2023. Please, send the pdf of your abstract by e-mail to Prof Reinaldo Rodriguez Ramos.

Proceedings
It is planned to publish the final papers after the conference. At the moment, there are the following possibilities:

  • ASM Series book
  • SI of ZAMM
  • SI of Technische Mechanik

We encourage potential participants to inform the scientific committee if they desire to publish in one of the mentioned alternatives. Please, do express your interest when submitting your abstract.

Registration fee
The registration fee for the conference is 450 US dollars (250 US dollars for students). It will have to be paid electronically by following the instructions sent via email by the University of La Havana. It includes coffee breaks, lunch, and conference dinner.

Venue
Cuba is known for its touristic opportunities, including eco-tourism, colorful cultural and literary heritage, and its deep historical interest. The University of Havana or UH (in Spanish, Universidad de La Habana) is a university located in the Vedado district of Havana, the capital of the Republic of Cuba. Founded on January 5, 1728, the university is the oldest in Cuba, but not one of the first to be founded in the Americas (the National University of San Marcos in Lima was founded in 1551). Originally a religious institution, today the University of Havana has 15 faculties (colleges) at its Havana campus and distance learning centres throughout Cuba. Havana is the capital city, largest city, province, major port, and leading commercial center of Cuba. The city has a population of 2.1 million inhabitants, and it spans a total of 781.58 km2 (301.77 sq mi) – making it the largest city by area, the most populous city, and the fourth largest metropolitan area in the Caribbean region. The city of Havana was founded by the Spanish in the 16th century and due to its strategic location, it served as a springboard for the Spanish conquest of the Americas, becoming a stopping point for treasure-laden Spanish galleons returning to Spain. The King Philip II of Spain granted Havana the title of City in 1592. Walls as well as forts were built to protect the old city.

Coronavirus
The situation regarding the coronavirus is being monitored. The planning of the meeting is based on the assumption that the international situation will improve during 2023 in such a way that the meeting can be held safely and without restrictions for participants.
