Abstract

I will consider the question of which closed 3-manifolds can be smoothly embedded in 4-dimensional space. An obstruction can be derived from Donaldson's theorem on the intersection forms of smooth, closed 4-manifolds. This technique is also useful when considering which rational homology spheres smoothly bound rational balls and, in this context, has recently been shown to be a powerful tool. It is particularly applicable to Seifert fibred 3-manifolds. In this talk I will discuss a few special cases of this embedding problem.
