Abstract

Derivations are an important class of linear maps in Banach algebra theory. It would be convenient if we could extend a derivation  defined on a closed subalgebra to a derivation defined on the whole Banach algebra. This is certainly not the case. However, under some fairly restrictive conditions it is possible to construct such derivation extensions. In this talk, we discuss some results concerning derivation extensions and the consequences for Banach algebra theory.
