The School of Computing Science is considered a research power house and was rated 8th in the United Kingdom in the last independent research assessment exercise (RAE 2008). We are also ranked in the top 100 in the QS World University Rankings for Computing in 2013, recognising our quality on an international stage.
We have 33 academic staff, 7 Research Fellows, 36 Research Associates/Assistants, and almost 100 PhD students. Our research strategy is based on combining world-leading theoretical work with practical applications and much of our research has created high public impact, e.g. NHS Kidney Exchange Programme.
The School’s research is driven by 7 research groups: Information Retrieval (IR), Glasgow Interactive SysTems (GIST), Inference, Dynamics and Interaction (IDI), Formal Analysis, Theory and Algorithms (FATA), Embedded, Networked and Distributed Systems (ENDS), Software Engineering and Information Security (SE & IS), and Computer Vision and Graphics (CVG). The School’s research groups have sustained their world-leading quality and productivity. In the ACM Digital Library, Glasgow is in the 95th percentile worldwide for citations and 100th percentile for downloads, producing per annum around 200 publications. Since 2008, over 48,000 citations (Google Scholar) have been made to the publications of our School's research staff. Our project portfolio includes around 127 externally funded projects since 2008: 28 of these projects were industrially funded; 41 were EPSRC projects; 11 were EC-funded projects. The School currently hosts more than 20 externally funded research projects with an annual income of £2.5-3 million.
Our research degrees enjoy world-wide prestige and we offer postgraduate programmes of outstanding quality. Postgraduate students benefit from the best possible support and supervision and, on graduating, they are well qualified to take up key posts in industry and academia.
The vibrant research culture of the School strongly encourages cross-disciplinary collaboration with each research group running its own seminar series, as well as contributing to a weekly research forum.
