The next phase of the redevelopment of the Glasgow University Union / Stevenson building is getting underway and now animated "fly thru" video has been released giving an impression of how the new building will look.

GUU Stevenson architect impression 250 imageThe Stevenson building extension is the largest development of sport provisions at the University of Glasgow since the introduction of the Garscube Sports Complex in 1997. It will provide more opportunities and much needed additional sport and exercise facilities to the University community.

The project team has worked with ECD Architects to create a 3D walkthrough highlighting finalised design concepts of the new Stevenson extension.

The video gives an insight into new spaces that will be available from the next academic year. It also shows how the new building will link to the current Stevenson building entrance.

This innovative development in sport provisions will provide sufficient space to enable more activity. The cardiovascular and muscle conditioning areas, featuring a wide spectrum of equipment, will each be 725sqm - equal to all 3 activity spaces on level 4! The activity hall will have a high performance floor system with a viewing gallery for all sporting needs. Sport and Recreation are still finalising the layout, type and quantities of equipment. They plan updates with key milestones in the run up to the opening in late 2015.

Work has been continuing on the site at the corner of Kelvin Way and Gibson Street, following the demolition of the original building which dated back to 1965 and housed the Hive night club.  Heron Bros. Ltd., the main contractors, have been driving piles into the corner site in order to stabilise the terrain and prepare it for the new build.  Soon work will start on erecting the steel framework which will form the new building's core.  It's expected that the new facilities will be ready in time for the start of the 2015 academic session.
