The next phase of the redevelopment of the Glasgow University Union / Stevenson building is about to start within the next few weeks.

Work has been continuing on the site at the corner of Kelvin Way and Gibson Street, following the demolition of the original building which dated back to 1965 and housed the Hive night club.  Heron Bros. Ltd., the main contractors, have been driving piles into the corner site in order to stabilise the terrain and prepare it for the new build.  Soon work will start on erecting the steel framework which will form the new building's core.  It's expected that the new facilities will be ready in time for the start of the 2015 academic session.

The new, five-storey structure connecting the GUU to Sport and Recreation's Stevenson Building on Oakfield Avenue will provide new, indoor sports facilities and, on the ground floor, a modern nightclub and four cafe/bars. The new sports facilities will include:‌

  • Four-court multi-purpose activity hall with viewing gallery
  • Increased cardio-vascular and stretching provision
  • Increased muscle conditioning provision
  • Increased exercise studio space including a martial arts dojo studio

‌A spokesperson for Estates and Buildings said: "We have been doing our best to keep students and staff updated with what is happening on the site.

"The contractors are tasked with keeping noise and other disruption to an absolute minimum.  This isn't always easy, particularly with operations such as driving piles. When residents and staff have contacted us we have been very quick to intervene to try to resolve problems satisfactorily."

The spokesperson continued: "The piling work will soon come to an end, but the creation of the steel framework for the new building is also likely to be noisy from time to time.  If people living or working adjacent to the site want to get in touch, they just need to call the Estates help-desk (Extn. 6547) or email communications@glasgow.ac.uk . We will always do our best to help."
