The University of Glasgow has been named the second most influential university in the UK Twittersphere! @GlasgowUni, with 37,000 followers, was just behind the University of Plymouth.

An internet marketing company, Coldlime, crunched the numbers for the 100 top-ranked universities in the UK and the US, and has produced what it believes is a definitive list of the most influential higher education institutions on both sides of the Atlantic.

These tables show how many people are following each university, how many people they follow themselves (allowing a “follower ratio” to be calculated) and the number of tweets each account sends out per day, on average.

However, the rankings were decided by “social authority” scores - as calculated by Twitter analytics tool Followerwonk, which assesses each Twitter account’s level of influential activity. This includes the number of retweets the university is generating, and analysis of the user’s follower count and recent activity levels.

Glasgow's Social Media Officer in the Communications Office, Emma Gilmartin, said: "We were delighted that the University of Glasgow was named the second most influential university in the UK on Twitter! This is a fantastic result for us, showing the impact we're having on the micro-blogging platform."

Love Birds

Engaged couple May 2014The power of social media has been demonstrated in a romantic fashion. A few weeks ago the University appealed to social media followers to help two University of Glasgow love birds, Susan (a 4th year medical student) and Al (a University aeronautical engineering graduate), win their dream wedding. The pair, who got engaged in the cloisters, needed votes for the competition on Scotland's wedding blog 'We Fell In Love' .

Thanks to all the support from friends on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, and aided by local press coverage, Susan and Al secured a whopping 53% of the vote and won!

The pair were thrilled with their success and are busy planning their dream Glasgow wedding.
