Ann joined the University in 1971 on a trainee technician programme, straight from school.  Although starting work as a trainee, over the next few years she quickly climbed the ladder, eventually becoming Chief Technician in the department of Vet Pharmacology.  Along the way she gained several biology qualifications and, alongside the “day job”, completed an MSc in 1985 followed by a PhD in 1994.

Whilst in the midst of her PhD (and characteristically seeking yet more challenge) she moved in 1991 to the role of Laboratory Superintendent in the much larger Department of Biochemistry. In 1993 she began work with Safety and Environmental Protection Services, initially in an administrative role that included clerking the Health, Safety and Environment Committee for many years.

With a genuine interest in environmental matters, she sought formal qualification in environmental management and took on the role of Environmental Adviser, a job that she continues to do with great energy and enthusiasm.  Ann’s experience and knowledge of the University combined with her determination to make a difference have been of huge benefit to the institution and will be very much missed by her colleagues in SEPS and, I’m sure, across the organisation.

We all wish her a long, happy and fulfilling retirement. Friends and colleagues will be gathering on Monday 31st March from 3.30pm until about 5.30pm at Pearce Lodge to say a fond farewell to Ann.  If you’d like to attend or contribute please contact Jo McNally on extension 5532.
