East End Fun and Games

The University Services Volunteering Scheme got off to a flying start at an event held at the Crownpoint Sports Complex in the East End of Glasgow on Wednesday 18th June.

Nine members of staff from across University Services spent the day providing assistance to staff from Cornerstone, at a sports day for their clients and their volunteer supporters.  The event was timed to occur in the final month before the Commonwealth Games, so that everyone could have a foretaste of what is to come in July/August.  This provided a wonderful opportunity for shared fun for those supported by Cornerstone, a social care charity active across Scotland.

The weather was warm and sunny, but with a light breeze and the 200 or so people who converged on Crownpoint had an excellent day; participating in a range of races, games and matches.  The event was also attended by Clyde, the Commonwealth Games Official Mascot and Cornerstone’s own mascot.

Those taking part thoroughly enjoyed their volunteering experience and meeting colleagues from across the Services; as well as feeling that it was a day well spent being helpful to Cornerstone and their clients.

The comments from some of those who took part say it all:

“Yesterday was a huge success! I was delighted to have the chance to be part of such a happy, relaxed occasion. Everyone from Cornerstone made us feel very welcome and the managers made us aware of how grateful they were for the extra hands from GU.”

“A learning curve for all involved - main thing for the day was the participants had a very enjoyable time and I personally found being there to help that happen a very rewarding day all round.”

“I thoroughly enjoyed being involved in the event yesterday and meeting the other staff who took part. “Cornerstone group of volunteers

“The Cornerstone staff were very welcoming and made me feel we all contributed to a successful sports day for their clients.”

“I am looking forward and hope that I am able to help out at a few more events that Cornerstone will be arranging in the future and would have no hesitation in doing this.”

“Ahead of the event I was looking to get a feel for what could be involved in volunteering with Cornerstone and to have some fun and laughter along the way.  What a wonderful rewarding day it was.  Everyone was so welcoming and the excitement of all the participants was just great. “

The next volunteering event will be with our other charity partner - The Conservation Volunteers – and this will be some time in August.  Any member of staff in University Services that is interested in joining the volunteering pilot scheme can email  -  volunteer-programme@glasgow.ac.uk indicating whether it is Cornerstone or The Conservation Volunteers that you would be interested in volunteering for.
