Work to start on GUU Stevenson

Work will begin later this month on the extensive refurbishment of the Sports & Recreation centre at the Stevenson Building and on the replacement for the Glasgow University Union’s Hive nightclub.

Work will begin later this month on the extensive refurbishment of the Sports & Recreation centre at the Stevenson Building and on the replacement for the Glasgow University Union’s Hive nightclub.

Artists impression of new GUU Stevie building May 2014The plans, which had been delayed whilst contractors were appointed, are expected to become a reality in time for the start of the 2015 academic session.

A new five storey structure connecting the GUU to the Sports & Recreation’s Stevenson Building on Oakfield Avenue will be developed, providing new indoor sports facilities and, on the ground floor, a modern nightclub and four cafe/bars with Wi-Fi access

The new sports facilities will provide: 

  • Four court multi-purpose activity hall with viewing gallery
  •  Increased cardiovascular and stretching provision
  • Increased muscle conditioning provision
  • Increased exercise studio space including a martial arts dojo studio

Heron Bros Ltd have been appointed as lead contractor and work is due to begin towards the end of June.

Julie Ommer, Director of Sports and Recreation at the University of Glasgow said, “This is really great news.  The numbers of students and staff getting involved in sport and exercise at this University is phenomenal.  The new facilities will make such a big difference and we will be counting the months until these much needed sports facilities are completed. ”
